Review: Minor Figures cold brew coffee

Minor Figures cold brew coffee
Minor Figures cold brew coffee – minus the black coffee one, which I drank before I remembered to take a photo of it. Oops.

Cold brew coffee has been growing in popularity over the last few years. Not to be confused with ice coffee, cold brew is made by steeping coffee with room temperature water over 24 hours. This long brewing time produces coffee with a more nuanced, sweeter flavour. Cold brew coffee is dead easy to make and is ideal to have tucked away in the fridge as the weather gets warmer – but if you’re looking for something to grab on the go, look no further than Minor Figures cartons.

The very nice people at their PR agency send me their four flavours – now available at Sainsbury’s – to try out and I’m pleased to say they’re really lovely. Minor Figures coffee is made with ethically sourced, single origin beans, then cold brewed, and triple filtered. Full disclosure: I don’t know what the real flavour difference is between single filtered and tripled filtered coffee, but it certainly sounds good and the resulting coffee is light and fresh, with no bitterness. Fortunately, the process does not filter out any caffeine (thank goodness) or flavour. Even the black coffee is palatable, and I’m not really a black coffee fan.

The chocolate flavour (a mocha to you or me) is a real treat, with a hint of sweetness and a chocolatey punch. It’s brewed with cacao nibs, which are terribly fancy, so you know they’re not faffing about with anything naff. I also liked the coconut flavour, made with Sri Lankan coconut milk and coconut sugar. It’s perfect for those who don’t have dairy. My only tiny complaint is that the milk coffee has sugar in it, but this seems to be the case for all pre-packed cold coffees. It’s also worth noting that Minor Figures coffees contain around three times less sugar than most of their competitors, so at least they’re not merrily tossing it in with gay abandon.

I would definitely pick up a carton if I’m looking for a pick-me-up on the go. They’re less than £2 so far cheaper than your average coffee shop jobby, and the packaging is very sweet, which is always a winner. I would recommend!
