Naples – restaurant recommendations

Pizzeria Da Michele
Pizzeria Da Michele

I’ve just come back from the most fantastic holiday to Naples in Italy. Naples is a mad mad place – totally chaotic, a little bit grimy, and very very… Italian. The food is AMAZING. Naples is where pizza was invented, and their margherita pizzas are to die for. You will not find better pizza anywhere on the planet. Traditional pizzas in Napoli only have tomato, mozzarella, olive oil, and basil on them, and I really do recommend sticking to the tradition. We ate a LOT of pizza while we were there and we didn’t have a single disappointing one, even when we were grabbing a slice on the go from a little kebab type shop!

Naples is also big for pastries and gelato, and they LOVE their rum babas. I hadn’t seen babas since the third season of the Great British Bake Off but they’re hugely popular in Naples. They’re a totally different shape too!

I’ve pulled together my favourite restaurants from our trip, just in case you ever find yourself in that part of Italy! We also had a day in Sorrento so I’ve thrown in a nice restaurant from there too.

Da Michele - a moment of bliss!

Da Michele Via Cesare Sersale, 1-3 80139 Naples, Italy
Da Michele is one of the oldest pizzerias, having been established in 1870. We went twice – it’s just that good. Pizzas are four euros, or five if you want double mozzarella (recommended!). Take away is available and might be best, otherwise you may end up queuing along with a lot of Italians! You can also watch the chefs making the pizzas in front of you, with their enormous pizza oven. It’s simply one of the best pizza’s I’ve ever had. You can find their website here.

Sorbillo – Via dei Tribunali, 32  80138 Naples, Italy
We had pizza from Sorbillo on our last night in Napoli, which happened to be our anniversary. We got a take away (three euros!) and shared a pizza outside on a step in the street. It was absolutely divine – incredible pizza. Their website is here.

Trattoria da Emilia – Via Marina Grande, 62, 80067 Sorrento, Italy
We spent an afternoon in Sorrento and it’s gorgeous. A lovely quiet little town after the hustle and bustle of Naples! We had lunch at Trattoria da Emilia, which is right on the sea front. I had a gorgeous plate of ricotta ravioli and my boyfriend had spaghetti with mussels and clams. It was all very good quality and not expensive at all!

The beautiful layers of a sfogliatella!

Scaturcio – Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, 19  80134 Naples, Italy
Scaturcio is a wonderful pasticceria, selling the most beautiful sfogliatelle (flakey pastries filled with citrus peel and ricotta) and babas! Be aware you have to pay for your desserts before you order them at the pastry bar, so you might want to learn the names or take photos on your phone to help you order what you want before taking the receipt to the pastry bar! Their website is here.

If you do head to Naples, have a really wonderful time! It’s a fantastic destination for foodies.
