Interview: Rebecca, Scarlett & the Spotty Dog Cakery

Rebecca at work in her kitchen! Love the bunting!

Rebecca recently opened her own cakery, ‘Scarlett and the Spotty Dog’, baking unusual and delicious cakes and biscuits in her farmhouse kitchen in the lovely Northumberland countryside, using locally and ethically sourced ingredients.

After quitting her job last year as a solicitor, she decided it was time to open the business she had always dreamed of in her family home: one that sold lovely homemade cakes and biscuits. ‘Scarlett and the Spotty Dog’ was born (her middle name is Scarlett and her spotty Jack Russell, Monty, is her little and equally cake obsessed companion!). The cakery opened in September 2010 and has been thriving ever since. We caught up with Rebecca last week, who gave us this inspiring and charming little interview.

I like baking because…

…it’s relaxing (most of the time!), creative and you get something gorgeous to eat at the end of it.

My favourite thing to make is…

…good, old fashioned chocolate cake with lots of butter icing. My mum used to make this for my Brother and I and I still absolutely adore it!

My favourite thing to eat is…

…cake (of course!). A close second is fresh bread from the oven with loads of butter.

You wouldn’t know it, but I…

…love gangster movies (my boyfriend thinks this is so surprising given my love for all things wholesome and homemade!)

The greatest meal in the world is…

…fish and chips eaten on the Northumberland coast.

At home in Northumberland.

The meaning of life is…

…lots of good food with friends and family

If I could have one wish it would be…

…that my little (and very old) dog, Monty, could live forever (or at least as long as me!)

I chose to open a cakery because…

…I adore cakes and I wanted to bake everyday. I also wanted more creativity in my life than I used to have and the freedom to work for myself.

The most amazing feeling in the world is…

…walking with my 3 dogs on a summer’s day on the hills by our house

My favourite place is…

…my kitchen at home when all the family is back and we’re eating a lovely meal.

My earliest foodie memory is…

…beef stew and dumplings made by my Gran. I vividly remember being tiny and thinking ‘wow, this tastes so good!’

The best advice I was ever given is/was…

…life is very very short so live it today-don’t wait for tomorrow (cheesy in a way, but very true).
